Dental Care

Maintaining good dental care habits is vital for preventing oral health problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. By practicing regular dental care, individuals can promote their oral health, maintain a healthy smile, and prevent potential complications in the future.

  • Dental care means taking care of your teeth and keeping them clean and healthy. It includes brushing your teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste, using dental floss to clean between your teeth, and going to the dentist for check-ups. Dentists can fix any problems with your teeth and help you keep them in good shape. They can also teach you how to take care of your teeth properly by brushing and flossing regularly. Dental care helps prevent cavities, gum problems, and bad breath. It's important to take care of your teeth to have a nice smile and avoid dental problems.

  • Brushing teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste helps remove plaque, bacteria, and food particles from the teeth surfaces.

  • Visiting a dentist for regular check-ups allows for professional examination and cleaning of teeth. Dentists can detect oral health issues early and provide appropriate treatment.

  • Dental care may also involve various treatments, such as fillings for cavities, root canals, tooth extractions, dental implants, braces for teeth alignment, and other procedures aimed at preserving oral health and enhancing appearance.

  • Dental care includes educating individuals about proper oral hygiene practices, including techniques for brushing and flossing, the importance of a balanced diet, and the avoidance of harmful habits like smoking or excessive sugary food consumption.

  • Dental care emphasizes preventive measures such as applying fluoride treatments to strengthen tooth enamel, dental sealants to protect against cavities, and regular cleanings to remove tartar buildup.

Dental Treatment for people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

Some dentists can help treat people with special needs at their clinic. But sometimes, it may be hard for them to go to the dentist because of a disability or medical condition. In that case, the dentist will suggest going to a special dental service. You can ask your dentist about how to get referred and if it's the right choice for you.

Special dental services are offered by community dental services. They have different places where they provide dental care, like hospitals, special health centeres, mobile clinics, and even visits to homes or nursing homes.

In some hospitals or health centers, they can give special care to people who need it. They might even offer treatment while you're asleep or under special medicine.

People who might need community dental services include:

  • Children with a lot of tooth decay who are scared or find it hard to cooperate.

  • Children with disabilities, learning problems, or medical conditions.

  • Children who need specific treatment.

  • Children who are in the care of someone or are at risk.

  • Adults with complex needs who find it hard to get regular dental care, like those with disabilities, mental health problems, or medical conditions.

  • Adults who can't leave their homes or are homeless.

Finding an NHS Dentist

You don’t have to register with a dentist in the same way as a GP. Instead, you can choose to use any dental surgery that is convenient for you, whether it’s near your home or work. You can contact any dental practice directly to check if they have any appointments available. Dental surgeries will not always have the capacity to take on new NHS patients. You may have to join a waiting list or look for a different dentist who is taking on new NHS patients.

You can find a list of dentists that are currently taking on more patients on the NHS website.
