How to Prepare for a Job Interview
Preparing for a job interview can be a nerve-wracking experience for anyone, but individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) might face unique challenges.
Here are some helpful tips and advice to help you feel more confident and prepared for your job interview:
Know Your Strengths: Reflect on your skills, experiences, and achievements. Identify your unique strengths that make you a valuable candidate for the position. Consider how your SEND-related skills, such as problem-solving or adaptability, can be assets in the workplace.
Research the Company: Study the company's website, mission, values, and recent news. Understand the industry and the role you're applying for. This knowledge will help you tailor your responses and demonstrate your genuine interest in the company.
Practice Interview Questions: Anticipate common interview questions and practice your answers. Focus on providing concise and relevant responses that highlight your skills and experiences. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers when discussing past experiences.
Prepare Reasonable Adjustment Requests: If you need any accommodations during the interview, plan how to discuss them with the interviewer. Be clear about what you require and how it will help you perform at your best during the interview process.
Mock Interviews: Practice with a friend, family member, or career advisor. Conduct mock interviews to simulate the real experience. This practice can help you become more comfortable with the interview format and receive feedback on your answers.
Visualise Success: Spend some time visualising a successful interview. Imagine yourself confidently answering questions, engaging with the interviewer, and leaving a positive impression. Visualisation can help reduce anxiety and boost your confidence.
Prepare Questions: Have thoughtful questions ready to ask the interviewer. This demonstrates your interest in the role and the company. Questions could revolve around the job responsibilities, team dynamics, company culture, and opportunities for growth.
Dress Appropriately: Choose an outfit that aligns with the company's dress code. Dressing appropriately shows that you're respectful of the company's expectations and are taking the interview seriously.
Arrive Early: Plan your route to the interview location and aim to arrive a bit early. This gives you time to compose yourself, review your notes, and enter the interview with a calm demeanor.
Manage Anxiety: Job interviews can be anxiety-inducing. Use relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or mindfulness to manage your nerves. Remind yourself that you're showcasing your abilities and experiences. You can find more about managing anxiety in our Anxiety page.
Use Technology: If you struggle with verbal communication, consider using assistive technology like communication apps or devices that help you express yourself more effectively.
Bring a Portfolio: If applicable, bring a portfolio showcasing your work, projects, or accomplishments. Visual aids can help illustrate your skills and experiences in a tangible way.
Follow Up: After the interview, send a thank-you email to the interviewer. Express gratitude for the opportunity and reiterate your interest in the position. This gesture can leave a positive lasting impression.
Remember, every interview is a chance for you to demonstrate your abilities and potential. Embrace your uniqueness and focus on how your skills can contribute to the company's success. With careful preparation and self-assurance, you can navigate the interview process with confidence and show that you are an excellent fit for the job.
