What is the UK Youth Parliament?

The UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) is similar to the adult UK parliament, but it is ran by young people for young people and enables 11-18-year olds to use their energy and passion to change the world for the better and bring around social change.

UK Youth Parliament aims to give a voice to young people which will be listened to by local, regional and national government, providers of services for young people and other agencies who have an interest in the views of young people. UK Members of Youth Parliament is part of the British Youth Council which has an independent national identity and has a rolling programme of activities across the year, including an annual sitting, a sitting in the House of Commons.

Interested in becoming a Member of Youth Parliament (MYP)?

Being an Member of Youth Parliament is a very exciting opportunity. You will collect and represent the views of other young people in Wirral on issues that matter to them and present them on a local, regional and national level. You are standing to represent young people, NOT political ideologies. Youth Member of Youth Parliament are not based on a political party but stand only for youth.

Member of Youth Parliament stand for a 2-year term.

What’s it all about and how does it work?

It’s about your passion to support and bring positive changes for young people in Wirral. Based on the needs of Wirral young people and your drive to make things happen. Being able to represent Wirral young people to the best of your ability, through training, meetings, presentations, campaigns, discussion, and debates.

The Structure of UK Member of Youth Parliament in the UK Each Local Authority (LA) across England represents a UKYP constituency. Each constituency has an allocation of representatives called Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs).

The number of Member of Youth Parliament in each constituency depend upon the numbers of young people in that area. Wirral has 2 UK MYP roles and 2 Deputy roles What’s the role of an Member of Youth Parliament?

The expectation -

• Meet with Youth Voice groups running in Wirral and Liverpool City Region area

• Attend weekly workshops and training.

• To support Wirral based youth campaigns, Wirral Youth Conference and Parliaments.

• Help develop a Youth Surgery process.

• Help to run Make Your Mark campaign

• Collect and represent the views of young people e.g. locally to raise at the House of Commons sitting or with leaders and decision makers

• Take part in the wider local, regional and national work including UKYP programme.

• Attends local and regional meetings and to act on the result of Make Your Mark with other MYPs (www.ukyouthparliament.org.uk/makeyourmark) Support from Wirral Borough Council will provide a dedicated lead worker to support you in your role as Member of Youth Parliament for Wirral.

They will help you with financial support for your UKYP role e.g. travel expenses, and where appropriate they will accompany you to meetings. Wirral will also assist with establishing meetings with local councillors/officers of the council, press releases and any other ideas you may have to make your time as an MYP a success.

Time commitment

• 3 hours per week

• Holiday training

• Arranged meetings (shared attendance between the 4 roles)

• 2 British Youth Council weekend events

•1 attendance at the UK Members of Youth Parliament at the House of Commons 2024 and 2025 (Please consider if you have the time to be an Member of Youth Parliament, particularly if you are just entering your GCSE or A-level years or are already heavily committed elsewhere).

If you feel like you are still interested in becoming an Member of Youth Parliament you need to fill out the rest of this form. You will also need to ask a reliable adult to help you. (This cannot be an adult you live with or are related to. A youth worker, social worker, lead worker, teacher, lecturer, advisor, uniformed worker, coach, can all be your reliable adult. They will support you in your application and write a reference. You need to provide their contact details in the application.
