Wirral Met College Wins Award for Exceptional Student Support
Wirral Met College won an award for its exceptional support of high needs students. The college won the RCU Award for Support for Students. Staff and students received the award at the 2024/25 Association of Colleges Beacon Awards in London.
Wirral Met saw an increase in sensory processing differences in high needs students. It also noticed a rise in anxiety levels. It then took steps to make sure that the right support was in place for these students to help them thrive. The college collaborated with experts in sensory processing and trauma-informed practice. First, the college reviewed its specialist high needs provision. Changes were then made to the curriculum and the learning environment.
The changes included the development of new accessible spaces. These high specification rooms support students with sensory regulation needs. They help them to develop strategies and manage their needs. Promoting independent living skills.
This project also included the creation of the Neurodiversity Council student group. These students took part in shaping the project. Helping those with neurodiverse needs thrive in a mainstream Further Education setting. The Neurodiversity Council is now important to the college's ongoing commitment to inclusivity.
The award shows Wirral Met's outstanding commitment to supporting its students. It highlights the college's dedication to providing an inclusive and nurturing learning environment. Helping all students to thrive.
Congratulations Wirral Met!
