Vision Support Team

Our Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired (QTVI) support any child or young person (0-25) with a significant sight impairment that is not corrected by glasses. Children or young people have usually been diagnosed as having a Vision Impairment by an Ophthalmologist or Orthoptist.

The level of involvement from the team will vary according to the child or young person’s visual condition.

We offer guidance, advice and support to schools and families in order to maximise opportunities for learning and inclusion so that children and young people with a visual impairment can achieve their potential.

Individualised programmes, specialist teaching and support is given, appropriate to children’s need, as part of a graduated approach to ensure inclusion in school and the community and to support social and emotional wellbeing.

We work with babies, children and young people with a diagnosed vision impairment. This includes children with additional special educational needs and disabilities.

Getting a diagnosis is the first step to the right support.

If you’re worried about your child’s vision, you need to get their eyes checked at the opticians.

Your GP can send you to a children’s eye specialist (ophthalmologist). They will do tests to find out what the problem is.
