Introducing the Neurodiversity Profiling Tool
A Neurodiversity (ND) profiling tool is being rolled out across Wirral to support the early identification and early help of children and young people presenting with neurodevelopmental needs.
What is the ND Profiling Tool
The profiling tool was initially piloted with 50 families in Portsmouth from March 2021 to April 2022 and is now used across their city. It has since been adopted by other areas nationally.
Wirral have been identified as an early adopter site across Chesire and Merseyside for implementation of the ND Profiling Tool and it will form part of the Wirral Graduated Approach.
The tool is a visual document that is used to assess nine developmental areas of a child or young person aged 0 to 19:
Speech and Language
Energy Levels
Attention and Impulse Control
Emotional Regulation
Motor Skills
Sensory
Flexibility and Adaptability
Systemizing and Empathizing
Cognitive Ability
It provides a holistic view of a child or young person’s needs and suggests types of strategies that can be put in place to help manage those needs in different areas of life, such as at home, at their early years setting, school and in the community.
The ND Profiling Tool is only required when neurodevelopmental concerns and questions are raised for a child or young person. It will support a change in culture to a more needs led approach.
Phased Roll-Out
A phased roll out of the ND Profiling Tool will be taking place during January – July 2025.
Having a phased roll out allows for learning and review of the support needs to ensure the best outcome for the child on completion.
