SENDLO offers opportunities for young people with SEND
SENDLO recently had the pleasure of meeting Kaitlyn, an inspirational young lady who came to do some work experience with us. We asked Kaitlyn to to do a short write-up on her time with us, which you can read below.
Hi, my name is Kaitlyn and I’m currently studying at the RNC (The Royal National College for the blind) in Hereford.
This week I have been working with the SENDLO team at Wirral Council. The team have been verry supportive of my needs being a blind individual.
Sally and her team have ensured that I was included in all tasks that working for SEND requires, and if I didn’t understand something or needed something describing to me; then Annie or Robbie would describe it to me so that I could build a visual image in my head of what something may look like.
Two of the tasks that I have been included in are:
visiting SEND Schools and finding out if they need any extra support from the SENDLO team
editing documents for the SENDLO website and making it more accessible for all users
I have really enjoyed working alongside the team as they have ensured that everything that I have needed to use is blind friendly and I have felt included and a part of the team in all the tasks that I have been a part of during the last week.
I would strongly recommend anybody with SEND or any other special needs, if they are looking for valuable work experience, to consider contacting the SENDLO team as having this type of experience will set you up for what ever your career path maybe in the future.
In the near future, I’m hoping to either do a supportive internship or an apprenticeship where I can make more awareness of special needs in the wider community. I want to make everyday life more accessible for all individuals that have a special need.
