In November 2024 a large number of new Special Education Needs Coordinators (SENCOs) started work across Wirral’s early years settings, primary and secondary schools, and colleges.

Many of these new starters came to a recent SENCO Exchange event with Wirral Council’s SEND Team, and they asked us if there was any specific training just for new SENCOs.

We listened to what they said they needed and developed a two and a half hour training session for them. The training was designed to support the SENCOs in their day-to-day duties and covered a variety of topics including:

  • Information on health

  • Information on education

  • Information on social care

  • SENDLO

There was even a ‘top tips’ section delivered by one of Wirral’s most experienced SENCOS, Fiona Barrick from Dawpool Primary School!

“I just wanted to say thank you…I found it so helpful to hear from all of the speakers.” – Secondary school SENCO

All of the new SENCOs who attended the training thought that it was useful. The opportunity to network with other new SENCOs helped them to develop a support network and share good practice.

“I just wanted to say thank you to you and your colleagues for the training…As a new SENCO, I found it very informative and helpful.” – Primary school SENCO
